Role Overview

Altagrid is seeking a Vice President of BESS Engineering to lead engineering delivery, build and scale the design team, and own engineering standards and QA/QC execution. The VP works alongside Altagrid's Engineer of Record / licensed PE, who holds professional responsible charge; the VP owns delivery leadership, team-building, and production quality

This role will:

  • Oversee technical execution across all BESS engagements

  • Establish engineering standards and QA/QC processes

  • Support complex projects including large-load and data center integration

  • Build and scale a high-performing engineering team

The VP of BESS Engineering will serve as the firm’s senior technical authority and play a critical role in shaping Altagrid’s long-term defensibility and credibility.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as technical authority for all BESS engineering engagements

  • Oversee prelim engineering and site studies deliverables

  • Guide technical strategy for portfolio-level clients

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and grid requirements

Engineering Delivery Oversight

  • Review and approve preliminary engineering and site study

  • Own production of Issue-for-Construction (IFC) (10%-30%-60%-IFP-IC) drawing packages (Electrical, Civil, Structural) and ensure deliverables meet stamping and constructability standards.

  • Ensure quality and consistency across projects

  • Establish standardized templates and engineering workflows

Client-Facing Technical Strategy

  • Lead technical discussions with developers, IPPs, and EPCs

  • Support proposals and technical scopes of work

  • Represent Altagrid in high-level technical meetings

  • Provide advisory input on bankability and technical risk

Team & Process Development

  • Build and mentor engineering team members

  • Establish QA/QC procedures and review gates

  • Develop scalable engineering playbooks

  • Improve technical efficiency and margin discipline

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • 10+ years in utility-scale energy storage, solar or power engineering

  • Direct experience designing or overseeing BESS projects (50MW+ scale preferred)

  • Experience at an EOR, owner's engineer, or EPC firm delivering utility-scale BESS or renewables

  • PE License

  • Civil or Structural Engineering Background

Strongly Preferred

  • Prior Experience leading remote teams

  • PMP Certificate
